Not All Good News for BHP
There is a term in legacy mining called social rent. This is the cost paid to mollify the local population while the mining giant makes billions. There is a another saying in legacy mining, “the mine gets the money, the community gets the shaft.”
This is the problem we exist to solve.
By making early stage and follow on investments in the discoveries that are, from the ground up, built in partnership with the local community, we can change the world.
BHP is the latest mining giant that is feeling the pain of trying to make a mine work for a local community, after investing billions and promising shareholders congruent value. This year we have already seen one of the largest producing copper mines shut down over social and environmental concerns, justified? Maybe. But, shut down nevertheless.
BHP needs to listen to all of its stakeholders, the world cannot afford to lose this valuable copper producing asset.
